Hurricane Katrina

This weekend marks the 5 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina when the lives of thousands in the Gulf Coast were turned upside down. While much has been accomplished over these 5 years, there is still much to be done. One blessing has been the absence of a damaging hurricane since 2005, but the recent Gulf Oil spill only added insult to injury for those still struggling to live in that area of the country.

One positive result of Hurricane Katrina was an awareness of the importance of “Being Prepared”. Many families now have emergency kits in their homes with a supply of food and survival items. Businesses, churches and schools have put together emergency plans. But there are still those who do not realize the importance of “Being Prepared”. While most of us have been spared from major disasters, others have had to deal with fires, floods, tornados, earthquakes, and mudslides. Homes, schools, churches, businesses have been badly damaged or destroyed. That is when we can step in with the love of Christ giving HOPE to those who have suffered losses.

As Christians, we can play an important roll in the recovery process when these disasters happen, if we are prepared. This ministry is best accomplished if you and your congregation have a plan to respond. On the Southeastern District website there are 6 modules that can be accessed which congregations can use to begin the process of “Being Prepared”. As we approach this 5th anniversary-as well as Hurricane Preparedness Month-please take the time to discuss your congregation’s preparedness with your pastor and leaders and plan to develop a plan for preparedness. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Deaconess Liz DeMik at the SED office, 800-637-5723 Ext. 215.

May God bless our ministries of care and compassion for our neighbor in their times of need.

Emergency Response: Pakistan

As monsoon rains in Pakistan continue to cause widespread flooding that so far has killed 1,600 and affected nearly 14 million Pakistanis. Nearly six million people are now homeless because of the floods from monsoon rains that began in late-July. The floods have spread through four provinces, covering more than 50,000 square miles-including Pakistan’s agricultural heartland.

Right now, relief workers are rushing to get shelter, food and medical attention to flood victims. Hunger is also a major concern as so much of the country’s farmland has been destroyed and food prices continue to rise sharply.

LCMS World Relief and Human Care (WR-HC) is responding through its inter-Lutheran partner Lutheran World Relief (LWR), Baltimore. “This is the most effective and efficient way that aid and assistance can be brought to the people of Pakistan,” said Rev. Glenn Merritt, WR-HC director of disaster response. “Lutheran World Relief is actively engaged in meeting the needs in Pakistan through ACT Alliance.” ACT Alliance is a global coalition of churches and agencies engaged in development, humanitarian response and advocacy.

To make a gift that shares Christ’s mercy and helps those affected by the flooding in Pakistan, visit the LCMS World Relief web site, or call 888.930.4438, or mail donations earmarked for “Pakistan Flood Relief Fund” to LCMS World Relief and Human Care, P.O. Box 66861, St. Louis, MO 63166-6861.

How about an Orphan Grain Train “Undie Sunday?”

Destitute people around the world need the very basic necessities. Thousands of children in Nicaragua and Kyrgyzstan helped by Orphan Grain Train, Maryland Division, often do not have good underwear and socks. Often with only the shirt on their backs, it is difficult for them to obtain good clothes, not to mention: UNDERWEAR!!!

How can you help? Collect new underwear for Orphan Grain Train Maryland Division to send to needy people! Men’s, women’s, boy’s and girl’s-all sizes are needed. Announce an “Orphan Grain Train ‘Undie Sunday’” and offer a prayer that day for the people who will receive your gifts. The Oil Spill From Southern District Exec Gene Menzel

“Living along the Gulf Coast offers the opportunity for great food and chefs who say they can even make cardboard taste good.  We started 2010 with the Saints mantra leading to the winning of the Super Bowl. It’s been a “high time” along the Gulf Coast until April 20.

The saga of the ongoing BP oil spill has changed much of the landscape and emotion. We strive to take each day one day at a time and yes we are getting ready to host the 2010 National Youth Gathering. read more….

Help for Haiti – Children Need Shoes!
Among the many plights facing the people of Haiti after the devastating earthquake is that approximately 15,000 children have had amputations on their feet and legs due to infections.  These infections are a result of cuts and wounds from walking barefoot.  There is a desperate need for shoes, especially plastic ones that survive water similar to Crocs. You can help in two ways:

* Send a check to “Orphan Grain Train” memo line, “Haiti shoes.”  Please send to Orphan Grain Train c/o St. Paul Lutheran Church, 31 Roscoe Rowe Blvd., Annapolis, Maryland 21401.
* The Orphan Grain Train is preparing to ship a 40-foot container to Haiti and you can deliver any used shoes to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Annapolis. Please call Elfie Eberle at 410-544-1621 or Ron Phipps at 410-267-7593 to arrange for a delivery.  Please prayerfully consider this urgent need!

Bikes needed at Our Savior, Rehoboth Beach
Each year hundreds of international students come to Rehoboth Beach for summer work. Many of these students work two or three jobs and get around by bicycle. Our Savior Lutheran Church is one of the churches in the area to welcome these students by providing a safe environment, offering meals, bikes and bike repair, emergency assistance and fellowship. They usually serve about 200 students a week with a home-cooked meal. These kids are getting a glimpse of the church and of Christianity they have not seen before. There is always a need for bicycles for these students. If you have an extra bike sitting around, consider donating it to Our Savior. You may contact them at (302) 227-3066.

Caravan of Bread
The Lutheran Mission Society‘s “Caravan of Compassion” will distribute 100,000 loaves of bread in the Central Maryland area in July. The free bread will be distributed on four consecutive Thursdays beginning July 1st.  Frozen bread is loaded from a warehouse on Wednesday afternoons. The caravan will make four stops each Thursday at participating churches and LMS Compassion Centers.

Your help is needed in distributing 5,000 loaves of bread. Promotional materials and drop-off dates and locations are available on the Lutheran Mission Society website.

Tip of the Week: Prepare for hurricane season.
Remember to inventory your emergency kit from last season to ensure that items are not missing, expired, or perhaps new items need to be included.

Is your congregation prepared to deal with an unexpected disaster or emergency?

To make planning and preparation easier for each congregation, the Southeastern District Disaster Task Force has put together a series of 6 modules to begin the process.  Each module includes a video introduction/explanation from a member of the Task Force as well as forms and other written information to assist in your planning. Each module can be used independently from the others, one at a time. You may download these from the SED Extended Mercy page and click on the modules. Also check out the series of videos the team has developed for congregational preparedness.

You are encouraged to take a look at the modules and begin the process of developing a disaster preparedness plan for your congregation. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Sally Hiller or Liz DeMik

Hearts For Jesus Project

Each year the schools in our district support a Hearts for Jesus project with their chapel offerings. This year students have an opportunity to make an incredible difference in the lives of children in Flahn Town Village, Liberia where there children need a school. Since the civil war there has been no school in this region, so about 150 or more children in fifteen surrounding villages have no means to an education.

Working together we can make a difference – an eternal difference as we provide for Lutheran education in this area that is about 90 miles from Monrovia, the capital of Liberia. With a united effort, our chapel offerings from the Southeastern District can raise the $10,000 needed to build a school.

Please send your Hearts for Jesus check to the Southeastern District.

Expanding “Hope” in Virginia Beach, Va.
When growing Hope Lutheran Church decided to tackle a challenging remodeling and building project, Rev. Mark Nieting “strongly encouraged” the Virginia Beach, congregation to participate in the Laborers For Christ program.

Laborers For Christ are a ministry of the Lutheran Church Extension Fund (LCEF) that helps LCMS congregations take on their own construction projects and build within their budgets.

“I absolutely wanted this congregation to enjoy the wonderful experience of Laborers For Christ,” Nieting said. When Laborers worked for Nieting’s previous congregation, Emmanuel Lutheran in Asheville, N.C., that experience proved so positive that three congregation members joined Laborers – and the pastor joined the ranks of Laborers boosters.

Today, eight Laborers couples and Hope Lutheran volunteers are building a new fellowship hall and remodeling the church’s old fellowship facility into a “kids’ kingdom” for young children and expanded space for the church’s popular youth ministry. The congregation hopes to finish the project by mid-summer.

The church also looked to LCEF for construction loan support and to LCEF’s Capital Funding Services for help with a capital stewardship campaign. “Our campaign was so successful, we shifted gears and actually built a bigger project,” Nieting said. “We were so blessed by the campaign.”

Since Laborers For Christ was founded in 1980, the ministry has helped congregations complete more than 780 “building for eternity” projects. To learn more about Laborers For Christ, visit www.lcef.org/services/laborers_for_christ.

Bridge Hispanic Mission – Hickory NC
It is fascinating to watch a space shuttle launch into space.  Each launch is an impressive feat of energy, calculation, and preparation.  Millions of details and dollars all culminate when the countdown reaches zero.
3 . . . 2 . . . 1 . . . Liftoff!

The comparison is exaggerated, but twice a year The Bridge has its own version of a launch as we begin a new semester of outreach.  Volunteers recruited and trained.  Meetings completed.  Students invited, registered, and evaluated.  Curriculum developed and photocopied.  Facilities confirmed and materials prepared.

And it all culminates on a Thursday night at St. Stephens Elementary School:  Several levels of English classes begin and 5 small groups of Kids Connect are organized.  50 volunteers arrive early to welcome 40 Hispanic adults and 40+ kids.  There are dozens of people to direct and hundreds of details to coordinate.

Yet as chaotic as launch night can be, there is always a great sense of excitement and anticipation as we witness God’s faithfulness in drawing together so many people to a place where they can experience his compassion and hear his word.

On January 21, we launched into our third semester of outreach.
·      Please pray that the Hispanic families would experience God’s love though the volunteers.
·      Pray that the volunteers would develop great relationships with kids and adults.
·      Pray that God would use these relationships to open doors for his Good News to be shared!

CELEBRATE CONCORDIA SUNDAY, APRIL 18
Concordia University System colleges and universities are a special gift to The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. It has been said many times but it’s worth repeating: A church body that teaches is a church body in mission!

April 18 has been designated as Concordia Sunday, a day to celebrate our colleges and universities.  They help prepare individuals to serve the church as pastors, teachers, directors of Christian education and outreach, deaconesses, lay ministers, and directors of family life ministry and parish music. They also prepare individuals to serve the community as Christian leaders in business, education, nursing, pharmacy, and numerous other professions.

LCMS congregations are encouraged to celebrate Concordia Sunday.  This special day highlights the importance of a Christian education in a Lutheran context. It can encourage youth to consider serving in positions that benefit both the LCMS and society. It is also a special time for congregations to pray for the continued blessings of our Heavenly Father for ongoing ministry that proclaims Jesus Christ as the Lord of Life

VBS curriculum includes Dominican Republic mission project
Concordia Publishing House’s 2010 vacation Bible school curriculum, “Planet Zoom,” provides a hands-on opportunity for children to become more involved in God’s mission. The curriculum’s featured mission concept, “Project: Dominican Republic,” is a joint project of LCMS World Mission and LCMS World Relief and Human Care. The mission project encourages vacation Bible school participants to give offerings and supplies to share God’s love with our brothers and sisters in Christ in the Dominican Republic.

The proceeds from offerings given by children attending vacation Bible schools across the country will help build two Lutheran church buildings, purchase musical instruments and Christian resources, and purchase medicine and medical supplies for children with disabilities.

For more details on Project: Dominican Republic, and to view a brief video about mission work in the Dominican Republic, please visit www.lcms.org/vbs.

The “Planet Zoom” curriculum is available for purchase on the Concordia Publishing House Web site or by calling 1-800-325-3040.

A Note from Sally Hiller of the SED

February 11th, 2010 by lucasjs

February 9, 2010
Dear Friends,

The rising predictions of snowfall for these next two days is astounding. Already congregations and schools are struggling with closings and snow removal and most importantly, the pastoral care of members and their neighborhoods. As you continue to work your way through this winter of special challenge, don’t overlook the opportunity to reach out to a neighbor, check in with the elderly, and be a kind driver.

The District Office generally follows the Federal Government (DC Offices) with regard to opening and closing. We are currently closed (Monday and Tuesday) and will post messages on the homepage if we are closed. If you are also trying to reach us but not getting through to someone, extension 309 has a regularly updated phone message about the status of the office.
Mission U Continues – See You On Saturday   Sarah Guldalian will join us on Saturday for the fourth session of Mission U. We will be broadcasting live from Trinity Lutheran, Richmond VA. You won’t want to miss Session 4 of Mission U. Join us as we discuss witnessing tactics and dialogue to avoid so we do not alienate those around us. We’ll learn to determine the proper time for sharing our faith. We’ll also learn what to do about missed opportunities and how to move forward after conversations gone wrong. And, crucial to gaining confidence in our witness, we will improve in the area of responding to objections. Session 4 will provide answers to tough questions, as well as an opportunity to practice  responding to these questions. We will alaso learn to utilize apologetics towards deeper sharing. Join us on line, Saturday, January 9, at 9:00 a.m. at http://breeze.lsportal.net/sedm . Contact Cathy Long for additional information about connecting. Haiti Update Individuals, congregations, and school children are stepping forward to participate in the recovery efforts of Haiti. Such an extreme disaster will require a long-term partnership to recover, rebuild, and restore. I am hearing a new phrase surfacing in the midst of this crisis: legitimate organizations. We are blessed to be able to support three different legitimate Lutheran agencies: LCMS World Relief, Lutheran World Relief (LWR), and Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR). You can be certain that your donations will be used to their fullest to provide disaster relief and recovery.

Our Lutheran agencies are providing resources that offer opportunities for all of us to participate. Financial donations are needed to assist with an immediate need for medical resources and supplies. In addition, health kits, layettes, and meals can involve members of your congregation, school, and community in hands on projects. Also, a number of our congregations are preparing to send teams to assist with the recovery effort. Individuals participating must have completed a number of disaster response training programs. You can learn more about the opportunities to prepare for volunteering and mission trips at

Finally, I am excited about the notes I am picking up about what is happening throughout the District. Circuit 9 congregations will be preparing more than 100,000 meals. At least one response team is preparing to go to Haiti in late Spring. Choirs from Bowie State College, Ascension Lutheran School, Lamb of God, and C. Anthony Bush will hold a special benefit event (after the snow). Lutheran schools in the greater Baltimore area are working on a special project and will gather in March to assemble the project and remember in worship all who have felt the impact of this terrible event.

Yes, all around us I see the heart of Jesus overflowing in the actions of his people. It is exciting – to God be the glory! Please send your stories and pictures and let us share them with others.

Check out these legitimate Lutheran agencies for Haiti relief:
To volunteer, get updated information, or donate supplies, contact: LCMS World Relief.
Orphan Grain Train has wonderful hands-on projects and they are working with LCMS World Relief.
Lutheran World Relief also has a number of hands-on projects: quilts, health kits, and layettes are needed for the relief effort.

A final note: if you are sending a check, be certain that you note it is for Haiti Relief.

Lazarus Project Haiti Update

February 8th, 2010 by lucasjs

Dear Lazarus Project Partners,

I hope that you have all bookmarked www.lazarusprojecthaiti.org and are reading the daily updates from Debbie Berquist from Haiti. She has been our rock in this disaster and has been able to help so many people. We are blessed to have her there.

Be sure to visit the website today to see the interview with Nick Dixon of CHCH News in Hamilton, Canada, Debbie’s home town!

Media attention is beginning to wane as time passes, but we will continue to serve the people of the Lazarus Project long after Haiti has left the news and the last reporters have gone home. We are in this for the long haul and we appreciate your participation with us to help the children, teachers and staff of the Lazarus Project rebuild their homes, communities and lives in Haiti!

Thank you for your continued prayers and donations.

SED Message for Prayer Partners

January 22nd, 2010 by lucasjs

Dear Mission Prayer Partners,

We continue to be in prayer for the people of Haiti and the work of response. Many have responded to the cry for help with donations of time, materials, and money. May God multiply these gifts so that those in most need will be blessed.

Today, there is a major event in Washington DC. This is the March for Life rally in DC. I invite you to remember the precious gift of life that God so richly bestows on us and especially those little ones who are being so wonderfully knitted and shaped within the wombs of their mothers.

I’m certain you have seen the email news earlier this week calling all SED members to a time of prayer for the work of the LCMS Convention this summer. There is much scheduled for this event that could distract us from the mission and ministry to which God calls us. Pray that we remain focused on the work of reaching the nations – one person at a time- with the life-changing message of Jesus Christ.

I know this is getting lengthy and I have not yet begun the prayers and thanks we want to lifting up for all that God is doing among us. I will send an updated list of mission next week. But note below, that the prayer goals reflect some of the changes we are planning to see in this new year.

Our Prayer Goals for 2010

Let us join our hearts and voices as we pray for:

  1. Those who do not know Jesus Christ and the joy of His salvation for them.
  2. The work of mission outreach teams, missionaries, and outreach efforts that will make a Gospel difference in our communities.
  3. Boldness in each of our lives that we will regularly share the Good News of Jesus with others.
  4. The continued growth in prayer partners for mission. (Our goal is 3000 pray-ers and a prayer team for each new mission.)
  5. For 750,000 recorded faith-sharing events.
  6. For the work and the people of the Convention of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.

New Prayer Resources
Check out the new prayer resources now available on the website.(http://se.lcms.org/prayer/prayer-ministry-resources.php)

Thank you for your mission prayers, they are making an eternal difference.

10:02 am Prayers for the Harvest and Workers
Don’t forget to set your cell phones alarm/alert to 10:02 a.m. and pray for the Harvest and Workers. Luke 10:2 Jesus told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

A Message About Haiti from Sally Hiller of the SED

January 19th, 2010 by lucasjs

Dear Friends,

With each miracle story of another person found alive in the rubble, I give thanks to God. Indeed we are seeing miracles unfolding before us. And just I rejoice with the latest good news, I am praying for those people who continue to hope that their loved one will be found, who cry for help, who struggle for the very essentials of life. These are difficult days – moments and our prayers are needed.

A brief update for you regarding the relief response.
Thrivent for Lutherans has announced a decision to match $1 for every $2 given by its members up to $250 per member. Go to Thrivent “Helping Haiti” for information.

Lutheran World Relief has announced a “text to give” program. Starting Sunday, January 17, to support LWR from your cell phone, just text the keyword “LWR” to 40579 to donate $10. Remember to reply YES to the confirmation. It’s quick and easy, and the donation will appear on your next cell phone bill. Standard messaging and data rates may apply.

Many have asked about where to send contributions. LCMS World Relief and Human Care is working cooperatively with LCMS World Mission, Haitian missionaries, and partner churches to provide relief in a timely fashion. To make a gift that shares Christ’s mercy and helps suffering Haitians, click on the link below, call toll free 888-930-4438, or mail donations marked “Haiti Earthquake Relief” to LCMS World Relief and Human Care, P.O. Box 66861, St. Louis, MO 63166-6861.

Funds will go to support American Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti.

Each of these organizations have mobilized and are already involved in disaster response in Haiti. You can follow their work on their websites. Orphan Grain Train has also prepared to ship 513,216 “Kids Against Hunger” meals next week. Orphan Grain Train is shipping to Haiti both by air and by sea. They are also receiving cash donations to assist with this effort. You can learn more about it at their website.

I will continue to send updates your direction and urge you to continue to keep the people of Haiti, all the volunteers, and yes, even the process of response in your prayers.
