Southeastern District Disaster Response Guidelines for Congregations to Prevent, Prepare, Respond, Recover

The Southeastern District Disaster Response Task Force works to bring the tools needed to begin the process of preventing, preparing, responding and recovering from a disaster that a congregation or community may experience. On our website, you will find a series of modules that may be used, one at a time, to begin this important process. Please take the time to look over the modules, present them to your pastor and church leaders, and encourage them to begin this process. There are many resources available to help you and you are encouraged to contact the disasterhelp@se.lcms.org at any time with your questions. (Modules – click to get to module page on our website)

District Disaster Response Team

Interested in a congregational or family preparedness event? This is a great outreach event for your community. Host a disaster preparedness event in your church or circuit and invite the community to come. You might partner with Thrivent for a grant to help provide resources and have each family make a kit as part of the workshop. Contact Deaconess Liz DeMik at disasterhelp@se.lcms.org for additional information or to schedule a speaker.

Is there a designated Emergency/Disaster contact person for your church? The SED’s response plan for a disaster includes being able to reach someone in each congregation as a way of checking in. Do you have a designated person? If so, send Liz DeMik an email at disasterhelp@se.lcms.org to confirm.

Our plan includes following up after disasters to determine what assistance/resources may be needed in the congregation and in the community. It is helpful for us to have the name and contact information of someone who can share that information on behalf of the congregation.

News and Updates From The SED

July 31st, 2009 by lucasjs

This message is sent by Sally Hiller of the Southeastern District (SED) to share notices, official acts and events of the SED.

Mission U (niversity) is coming!
This year’s series for Training Lutherans for Outreach (TLO) is a special partnership with Lutheran Hour Ministries and it is all about sharing Jesus. Are you ready to share the news that has changed your life with another? For some this is easy and natural and for others – the most difficult thing they face. We know that Christ invites us to tell others, to make disciples, but -
What are the words?
When is the right moment?
How do I tell about Jesus in this conversation?
What happens if I say it wrong?
Will they think that I am religious?
What about the “are you saved” question?
These are the very topics that Mission U will address over the 4-part series.

The program this year is shaped around four sessions that will be joined together with mid-week chat room opportunities to keep individuals and groups connected. In addition, while there will be as many as 30 sites where individuals and small groups will gather, each session will be broadcast live at a different location. This is an incredible opportunity for you to nurture and grow an outreach team.

Join us at Mission U (9:– A.M. to Noon) on August 29, 2009, broadcast live from Prince of Peace, Springfield VA September 12, 2009, broadcast live from St. Stephen’s, Hickory NC January 9, 2010, broadcast live from St. Andrew, Silver Spring MD February 13, 2010, broadcast live from Trinity, Richmond VA

If you would like to be a host site for Mission U, please contact Cathy Long at: clong@se.lcms.org

Consecrated Stewards

As congregations recognize the need to renew and give attention to activities essential to the mission of the church, with increasing frequency they are seeking help in addressing stewardship needs in a biblical way. Consecrated Stewards raises Christian Stewards, not just money. It is based on the need of the giver to give and not the need of the church to receive. This stewardship emphasis raises people to a new level of spiritual commitment and annual giving with congregations generally experiencing intentions of giving that exceed previous envelope giving by 15% to 35%.

Consecrated Stewards ties the commitment process to the Sunday morning act of worship and uses a Guest Leader that works with you, on site, to keep the process on track. It is completed over eight weeks- four weeks of preparation, four weeks of emphasis with publicity and communication aids provided. Consecrated Stewards also provides sample sermons and bible studies for use during the emphasis. Total fixed program and material costs are generally under $1300.

For more information on this grace based program that urges people to take a step forward in their stewardship life without pressure or legalism, contact Cindy Haupt at the Southeastern District office at (800) 637-5723 or via e-mail at chaupt@se.lcms.org.

President Diefenthaler will be Out Fishin

July 27th, 2009 by lucasjs

The Tending the Flame conference is always a highlight for me. It brings together people from all of over our Southeastern District. There are plenty of laity as well as church workers. Some come as families with children of several ages. There is an energy that is easily felt, and there is a love for the Lord and his mission that everybody shares and wants to express.

This year’s conference in Richmond, July 31-August 2, is of particular interest to me. For it comes on the heels of this year’s District Convention, where we resolved to make “faith-sharing” the priority emphasis for the next three years. Thus far, we have recorded some 311,000 such moments, and by 2012, we intend to surpass the 750,000 marker on the way to our 2017 goal of 2.5 million.

“Out Fishin’” is also a theme that serves to capture all the dimensions of the work of outreach to which Jesus calls us. I pray that each of the sessions will serve both to inspire and to provide those of you who come to Richmond with the kind of practical, hands-on assistance in faith-sharing that so many of us are seeking.

Dr. Jon Diefenthaler

Mission Update from the SED

July 27th, 2009 by lucasjs

Let us join in prayer for God’s guidance and discernment as Pastor Pedro Lopez considers the call to serve as Hispanic Missionary in Circuit 9 (Northern VA). He, Francisca (his wife) and their four children are currently visiting Grace, Woodbridge, Prince of Peace, Springfield, and St. John’s, Franconia. Pastor Lopez will be resourcing the three ministries in Circuit 9 as well as helping to develop new leaders for outreach in Hispanic ministry.

An emerging ministry opportunity is taking shape in the area of Brevard/South MIlls NC. Circuit 19 is working with a core group of leaders and they are currently studying demographics. Let us surround this work and those who are providing leadership so that a strong witness to the Gospel becomes evident in the hearts and lives of many who live in this area.

Thank you for your mission prayers, they are making an eternal difference.

Out Fishin Message From the SED Mission and Ministry Executive

July 27th, 2009 by lucasjs

Dear Mission Prayer Partners,

This is the week for the District’s Tending the Flame Conference. Beginning Saturday more than 300 people will gather to learn about and practice their fishing for people skills. We are finishing up tasks here at the office and the front hallway is beginning to look as though we are moving out. During these next days I invite your prayers for this event and for the people who will grow much from being there.

Pray for:

1. Our speakers: Rev. Tom Zehnder, Rev. Art Scherer, Rev. Phil Bickle, and Sarah Guadalian that God will use them in a mighty way to teach us, encourage us, and set us ablaze for the work of sharing Jesus.
2. The participants: that they will arrive in safety and find this conference to be an enrichment for the ministry God calls them to be about and an encouragement for their witness.
3. For those who wished they had signed up, but didn’t, that they would find their way to call in and register – there is still room.
4. For all who are leading workshops, that as they share they help others to see possibility and potential.
5. For Ken Medema and all who will attend his evening concert, that we might see the witness God has given him through music.
6. For the leaders of our children and youth programs, that in their serving they are reminded again of the joy of sharing Jesus with young people.
6. And most importantly, for those whose lives will be impacted because of the lessons learned from this event.

Evangelism and Discipling Devotional for July 17, 2009 from First St. John’s Lutheran Church York, Pa

July 26th, 2009 by lucasjs

Devotional for July 17 Vicar Jim Driskell First St. John’s Lutheran Church York, Pa.

We should continue the joyous theme today. By that I don’t mean just for today, as saved, sanctified, justified in Christ we should be joyous all the time. The following from Martin Luther gives another perspective, because we are saved in Christ Carl Schalk in his book Luther on Music says:

“To be silent about God’s grace in Jesus Christ is no longer an option for the Christian. For believers to refuse to sing and speak about their faith that is within them is to show that they do not believe. Luther says. ‘God has cheered our hearts and minds through His dear Son, who He gave for us to redeem us from sin, death, and the devil. He who believes this earnestly cannot be quiet about it. But he must gladly and willingly sing and speak about it so that others may come and hear it. And whoever does not want to sing and speak of it shows that he does not believe and that he does not belong under the new and joyful testament.’”

Maybe a little harsh, but the point is have you ever been joyous to the point of witnessing in song? According to Schalk, Luther felt it was another way that those of us in the royal priesthood of believers expressed our worship of God through song. Think about how you might do that in witnessing to others.

Matthew 28:20

Prayer: “Sing praises to the Lord, who sits enthroned in Zion! Tell among the peoples His deeds!” (Psalm 9:11) “I will sing to the Lord, because He has dealt bountifully with me.” (Psalm 13:6) “Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name.” (Psalm 30:4) From the time of David, Father, You have shown us how to worship You in song. To tell others of You in song. Help us Lord to continue to witness to You in our individual and our congregational song. Help us to show the world the joy we have in worshipping You in song. In the name of Jesus Christ whose praises we sing. Allelujah.

Faith Sharing Story from President Kieschnick, LCMS

July 26th, 2009 by lucasjs

While at the last of the 35 district conventions earlier this month, I went out for dinner with a friend and fellow pastor. As is my usual custom, I asked our server if it would be OK to pray for him as we asked God’s blessing on the food we were about to eat. He responded affirmatively but seemed ill at ease. Next, as I normally do, I asked whether he had any needs, concerns, joys, or thanksgivings for me to include in the prayer. “None at this time,” he said hastily, turning to attend to another table.

Later, when he returned to check on us, he obviously noted the clerical collar I was wearing. “Thanks for the prayer,” he said. Then he added that he was celebrating his tenth-month anniversary.

“Tenth-month anniversary of what?” I asked. He said it was his 10th month of sobriety.

We then engaged in a conversation in which he shared that he had not seen his two daughters since they were 1 and 3 years old, when his wife left him because of his severe alcoholism. Since achieving sobriety, he has located his daughters, now 16 and 18, via the Internet, has established long-distance communication with them, and is fulfilling his paternal responsibility to provide for their financial support.

This man spoke freely and emotionally about being absent from his daughters’ lives for 15 years. And he indicated a genuine and sincere appreciation for the positive influence in his own life on the part of the pastor of the church he now is attending.

As my dinner companion and I later discussed our conversation, both of us gave thanks for the direction this man’s life has taken. We also were grateful that this conversation had occurred, especially because we had the additional opportunity to provide hope and encouragement in a Christian witness to someone who has lived such a challenged life.

This brief story, my dear brothers in Christ, is encouragement to see and to seize every opportunity possible to give voice to the hope that is in you, the hope that comes from the grace of God made real for us in Word and Sacrament. Even, and perhaps especially, at times and in places when and where we might not expect such opportunities, the needs and burdens of people with whom we may come into contact provide avenues through which we are privileged “vigorously to make known the love of Christ by word and deed within our churches, communities, and the world.”

Prayer Partner Message from the SED

July 15th, 2009 by lucasjs

Dear Mission Prayer Partners,

My phone alarm continues to go off at 10:02 and I say a quiet prayer for mission work. Every once in a while, I’ll be in a meeting and I hear someone’s alarm go off at 10:02 and I know that they, too, are praying for mission and so I add a quiet ‘thank you’ to my prayers. I do believe these prayers are making a difference in the mission work that is taking shape throughout the District. I share this encouraging note from Lutheran school teacher Marlys Jean Natonick (St.John, Dover DE). She writes: ” Every time my phone goes off at 10:02 AM I know my little “cherubs” ~ my 3rd grade class ~ from last year are praying too. We prayed every day at 10:02 AM. Our ongoing prayers were for a boy named Ethan (his father is the president of Ms. Vendetti’s Rotary Club). He has a brain tumor. We also prayed for Baby Lilly. Her parents live in Upstate New York on a farm.

Then we would pray for ongoing concerns of the children. One day one little girl excitedly ran forward and said, “Let me pray. Let me pray!” She did and said, “Thank you God. This morning Isaac called (Isaac is 3 years old and had been in the hospital with breathing problems) and said, “Hi Taywor! I can brweavth betta now!” Thank you God for hearing our prayers!”
Wow! This has been an experience of a lifetime for this seasoned teacher!”

I have a hunch that it has been a life-shaping experience for these students as well. As this email goes to press, Marlys, Debbie Messnger, and Jennifer Rexroth from St. John are preparing for a 3-week mission trip in Sanghai China. Let us lift them up in prayer that God uses them in a mighty way to open the doors for conversations of grace.

Mission Update
Let us join in prayer for God’s guidance and discernment at Pastor Pedro Lopez considers a call to serve as Hispanic Missionary in Circuit 9 (Northern VA). He and his wife, Francisca will be visiting Grace, Woodbridge, Prince of Peace, Springfield, and St. John’s, Franconia at the end of July with their four children. Pastor Lopez will be resourcing the three ministries in Circuit 9 as well as helping to develop new leaders for outreach in Hispanic ministry.

Let us join our hearts and voices as we pray for:

1. Those who do not know Jesus Christ and the joy of His salvation for them.
2. The work of mission outreach teams, missionaries, and outreach efforts that will make a Gospel difference in our communities.
3. Boldness in each of our lives that we will regularly share the Good News of Jesus with others.
4. The continued growth in prayer partners for mission. (Our goal is 3000 pray-ers.)

Thank you for your mission prayers, they are making an eternal difference.
