Southeastern District Prayer Partners

October 25th, 2009 by lucasjs

Dear Mission Prayer Partners,

God’s blessings to you.

Don’t often break our pattern, but wanted to call you to prayer on behalf of Jermiya, granddaughter of Mission & Ministry Facilitator Lloyd Gaines. She was airlifted to Georgetown University Hospital on Saturday morning and is suffering from bleeding in the brain. The cause has not yet been determined. Please surround Jermiya, Christina (mom), and Lloyd and Paulette with prayers.

Give thanks to God for these prayers answered:

Rev. Pedro Lopez is at work greeting people with the Good News of the Gospel. He is the Hispanic Missionary for Circuit 9 (Northern VA) for whom we have been praying. Newly installed, his days are overflowing with outreach moments. We continue to lift him up in this work and especially remember his family who will be joining him in a few months.

Good Shepherd and the Early Child Development Center, Midlothian VA is open and growing. The congregation continues to have special dedication events celebrating the various partnerships of its development. The Early Childhood Center is receiving new registrations almost daily. We pray for the continued growth of these ministries as they make a difference in the lives of families.

St. John’s, Farmville VA was experiencing difficulty with getting their new building through all the necessary inspections. Well, last Sunday they retired the former building, walked through town led by the Cross of Christ, and entered the new. Dedication will be on Reformation Sunday. We give thanks to God for all the miracles that took place to get to this moment and lift up the congregation as they begin a new chapter in serving their community and sharing the Gospel.

Thank you for your mission prayers, they are making an eternal difference.

Web Office Hours on Tuesday, October 27

Don’t forget to check in with your questions and updates on Tuesday, October 27 from 7-9. It is a great opportunity to visit and learn what other teams are doing in their outreach work.

I spoke with Sarah on Wednesday. No baby yet and she was planning to be on line with us on Tuesday. I am praying that baby Zane arrived during these past days.

This weekend I was at a deli where signs were already posted informing customers of their Christmas hours. At first I thought that this was a bit early for such information, the store wasn’t decorated or anything. And the signs weren’t fancy, just informing customers of the schedule. The more I thought about it, the more I liked it. They wanted their regular and potential customers to be fully aware so that they could make decisions. Then I began thinking about those of us who already know the schedule for Advent and Christmas services. Announcements may go out in the November newsletter, but generally there are no signs for the community this far in advance.

Just a thought, but if we want to be certain the community has time to make plans to be in worship over the holidays maybe the signs should go up now.

Some Advent Christmas Outreach ideas:

  1. Candy Cane Giveaway – Find a public place to give away small candy canes at Christmas time.  Attach a card with the story of the candy cane on one side and information about your Christmas services on the other side.
  2. Community Festival of Carols – Connect your worship event or special choir concert as a community event rather than “St. John’s Festival…”
  3. Include the School – If you have a school or early childhood program, ask the children to draw pictures of the birth of Christ. Then use them to create a series of postcards to be sent by members of the congregation to invite others.
  4. Free Gift Wrapping – Go to your local mall or department store and provide free gift wrapping services.

An important reminder
Think follow through. The outreach effort is a first step. What comes next? How will you respond to those who come, participate, ask questions? Develop the plan so that the outreach effort doesn’t begin and end with the activity. Who will do follow-up and what will it look like?

A great webarticle is The 12 Mistakes of Christmas Outreach, Ideas and Strategies for Incarnational Cityreaching (http://12mistakes.info/)  It says: “At Christmas in our culture, the heart of man becomes more accessible than at any other time of the year. There simply is no other time when more unchurched people are more open to a message that reaches out to the heart.” Plan to nurture the heart. Plan for the next steps.

Mission U Update

October 9th, 2009 by lucasjs

missionu

Christmas may seem far away now, but with less than three months until Christmas day, now is the time to engage and activate in Christmas outreach! Effective outreach requires a strategy, a plan, delegation, preparation and smooth execution. In fact, when December comes, you should already be so prepared that you can simply review your list and check it twice.

Begin to consider the needs and interests of your community now so that you can plan appropriately. Once you have done so, you can begin to gather and activate your troops – a.k.a. your congregational members – to implement these plans for effective Christmas 2009 outreach.

The purpose of the MISSION U Christmas 2009 Outreach Challenge is to serve the spiritual and physical needs of our community in order to point them to Christ, the greatest gift of all. As author and expert on servant evangelism, Steve Sjogren, says, “It connects people to people in a natural, easy, low-risk, high grace way.”

I encourage you to review The Christmas 2009 Outreach Challenge: Christmas Outreach Ideas provided as a MISSION U Session 2 Study Resource, found at http://se.lcms.org/developing-leaders/training-leaders.php. This will assist you as you begin brainstorming for your congregational (and individual) outreach plan.

Also, as you brainstorm, consider how to utilize Lutheran Hour Ministries’ new Christmas 2009 resources, coming October 1st, as assistance. New Project Connect booklet What Is Christmas? is geared towards the unchurched and dechurched. Use this link to download this free PDF: www.lhmgift.org/storefront/product.asp?by=topic&style=&id=Spiritual%20Matters&code=6BE133. Also, check out our new Advent Devotions at http://www.adventdevotions.net/. One version is specifically geared towards seekers and the other to Christians.

Most of all, utilize your fellow MISSION U students, by joining us Tuesday, October 13th from 7 to 9 p.m. in the MISSION U chat room where we will brainstorm and plan Christmas outreach strategy together. In fact, we plan to meet two times a month – the second and fourth Tuesday of each month – to support each other as we prepare for congregational outreach and personal evangelism.

Do you have questions? Feel free to email me at sarah.guldalian@lhm.org. Merry (early) Christmas!

Next MissionU Web Office Date is Tuesday, October 13.

That’s right next week, 7-9 check in the MissionU office and learn how others are addressing the Christmas serving outreach. This is a great opportunity to check in, get a healthy dose of outreach encouragement, and learn what is happening around the District.

An Ablaze! Partners Message

October 9th, 2009 by lucasjs

Dear partners,

I’m writing today to tell you about an exciting new tool that is now available.  The Ablaze Partners Network (www.ablazepartners.net ) is now live and ready for you! This online community of practice for Lutherans seeking to share the Good News of Jesus is self-described as: “Lutheran congregational leaders and church body staff promoting and discussing best practices to improve mission in these five basic areas of congregational life: worship, discipleship, outreach, service, and church leadership.”

Ablaze Partners Network is a ministry of Royal Redeemer Lutheran Church, North Royalton, Ohio, and is looking to include thousands of passionate Lutheran mission advocates and leaders from across the United States and even the world.

The site supports three types of communication:

  • posted resources that users have found to be a best practice in their area of interest. These can be articles, study outlines, worship series, dramas, or videos.
  • discussion forums, in which a user can post a blog about a personal ministry experience or a recommended resource, and others can respond. One such discussion already underway is on the use of Twitter® and twittering in worship services; look under the category of ‘Media in Worship.’
  • support for hosting online seminars in a person’s field of expertise. The Network aims to facilitate online seminars that present best practices through providing a Webinar platform and help for a presenter to learn how to use the platform, publicize the Webinar, and collect fees the presenter expects.

Those wanting to comment on the potential for this Web site might offer a posting under Home > Forums > Church Leadership > Website Development. To do so, users need to register online and are encouraged to describe their background and church interests.

Get connected and start sharing your mission resources, ideas, and learnings today!

Disasters and Devastation in Philippines and Indonesia – Lutheran World Relief Responds

October 8th, 2009 by lucasjs

Baltimore, October 7, 2009 – Lutheran World Relief (LWR) is responding to several major disasters that have wreaked havoc in Asia, destroying communities and leaving scores of casualties with many more people lacking shelter, food, or medical care.

“This has been a turbulent and frightening two weeks for the people of the Philippines, Indonesia, and also the Pacific Islands of Samoa and Tonga,” says LWR president John Nunes.

On Saturday, September 26, Typhoon Ketsana slammed the Philippines, leaving hundreds dead and driving thousands more from their homes. In less than 24 hours, the storm brought a month’s worth of rain to the capital city of Manila, washing away homes and crops.

“Our partners tell us that the typhoon hit the island of Luzon so fast that residents were not prepared for it and had to seek refuge on their roofs,” says Joanne Fairley, LWR’s Director for Asia and the Middle East. Recent reports put the death toll around 300, with 700,000 people displaced. On October 3, a second typhoon, named Parma, struck, causing more flooding, claiming 17 more lives, and leaving a large portion of the northern Philippines without electricity. The two storms have caused significant damage to the agricultural infrastructure of the Philippines with officials predicting shortages of rice and other essential crops in 2010.

On Wednesday, September 30, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck West Sumatra in Indonesia, toppling buildings and destroying homes and roads. The next day a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck, causing more destruction and widespread panic but no additional casualties. Most recent reports put the death toll at over 700 people with 1,000 still missing. The total number of deaths may not be known for some time as efforts have shifted to focus on delivering aid to the survivors, many of whom are now homeless.

“Many have tried to seek refuge in places of worship but now even they are full and some are simply living outside their destroyed homes,” adds Fairley.

Lutheran World Relief is responding to these crises by working directly with partners on the ground and through its membership in the Action by Churches Together (ACT) International global aid alliance. In the Philippines, LWR is working with partners, including the Lutheran Church of the Philippines, to distribute food and supplies to 17,000 families in and around Manila.

In Indonesia, LWR is also working with local partners to deliver food and supplies and will also provide psychological support to people who have been traumatized by the disasters.

Lutheran World Relief needs to raise $300,000 to mount a full response to respond to these disasters. LWR is accepting donations for the “Asia Disasters” fund online at lwr.org, by phone at 800-LWR-LWR-2 or by mail at PO Box 17061, Baltimore, MD 21298-9832.

Lutheran World Relief Awarded $1.49 million for Malaria Work in Mali

October 7th, 2009 by lucasjs

Baltimore, October 7, 2009 – Lutheran World Relief has received a $1.49 million grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to extend the reach of malaria control in Mali.

“Lutheran World Relief is pleased to partner with USAID in the fight against malaria in Mali, the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the country. With this grant, we can broaden our malaria control efforts in Mali, reaching even more people at risk,” says Alissa Karg, LWR’s Deputy Regional Director for Africa.

The three-year grant is made possible through the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), an interagency governmental initiative led by USAID in partnership with the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Malaria Communities Program (MCP), a $30 million initiative created under the PMI, awards grants to support the efforts of communities and indigenous organizations to combat malaria in Africa. The program specifically aims to identify organizations that are uniquely positioned to work at the community level.

“The goals of the Malaria Communities Program fit well with the way LWR works. We work in partnership with local and community-based organizations, utilizing these groups’ knowledge, skills and assets to combat the conditions and effects of poverty,” says Karg.

With the grant from USAID, LWR will work to integrate malaria awareness, prevention and control activities into its efforts to improve agricultural incomes in Mali. Integrating malaria and agricultural work will help address the economic and information barriers that prevent rural communities from seeking timely malaria care.

LWR aims to reach 480,000 people in more than 400 communities, including more than 70,000 pregnant women and 90,000 children under the age of 5—two groups that are particularly vulnerable to malaria infection—by educating about malaria through the farmers’ own cooperatives and financial institutions and helping the cooperatives form community-managed health funds that provide access to malaria treatment.

Lutheran World Relief has been working in West Africa for more than 30 years, helping rural communities grow food, earn income, and improve living conditions.

“Our goal for working to fight malaria in Mali is two-fold. First, we want to spread the message about the importance of prevention, timely diagnosis and treatment. Secondly, we want to make sure that as many people as possible have access to timely malaria diagnosis and treatment. This grant and our partnership with USAID will help LWR to achieve both,” says Karg.

In addition to this grant from USAID, LWR has partnered with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod to raise malaria awareness and funds through the Lutheran Malaria Initiative, which is made possible through support from the United Nations Foundation.

WHO IS LWR? Lutheran World Relief, an international nonprofit organization, works to end poverty and injustice by empowering some of the world’s most impoverished communities to help themselves. With partners in 35 countries, LWR seeks to promote sustainable development with justice and dignity by helping communities bring about change for healthy, safe and secure lives; engage in Fair Trade; promote peace and reconciliation; and respond to emergencies. LWR is headquartered in Baltimore, Md. and has worked in international development and relief since 1945.

Lutheran World Relief is a ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS), individuals and parish groups in international relief, development, advocacy and social responsibility.
